The Tragic Mu-rder of Three-Year-Old Kelly Anne Jones

On September 24, 1989, three-year-old Kelly Anne Jones was just days away from turning four. A happy, energetic toddler with her whole life ahead of her, Kelly was visiting her aunt and cousin in Toowoomba, Queensland. What should have been a safe, loving family visit turned into an unimaginable nightmare that would devastate her family and shock the community.

Kelly Anne Jones was brutally murdered after being taken from her aunt’s home. Her killer was not a stranger lurking in the shadows — he was someone the family knew.

The Killer Was No Stranger

In the months leading up to the murder, John William Bennett had become friendly with Kelly’s aunt. He had visited the Toowoomba home on multiple occasions. On that fateful morning, Bennett took advantage of this familiarity. He abducted Kelly from the house.

She was last seen alive around 8:30am on September 24, 1989, standing in the back seat of Bennett’s car near a shop in Hampton, in the Toowoomba Region. That would be the final sighting of the precious little girl.

A Cold Confession and a Heartbreaking Search

A massive search quickly focused on the Hampton and Ravensbourne areas before expanding to Yarraman. Days later, Bennett was found by police. According to court reports, he was lying on top of a knife when located.

When confronted by Toowoomba detectives, Bennett confessed in chilling words:

“I’ve done something terrible to her. I killed her. I killed her. She wouldn’t let up. She annoyed me so I killed her.”

He admitted to suffocating the three-year-old because she was “annoying” him.

Bennett later took police and around 160 volunteers to the area where he believed he had left Kelly’s body. However, he could not remember the exact location. Despite extensive searches, Kelly Anne Jones’s remains have never been found.

Justice in Court

In June 1990, John William Bennett faced the Toowoomba Supreme Court. He pleaded guilty to the murder of Kelly Anne Jones and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

For more than 35 years, Bennett has remained behind bars. In 2023, he applied for parole under a “No Body, No Parole” hearing. During the hearing, he claimed recurring dreams might help him remember where he disposed of Kelly’s body. Kelly’s mother, Caroline Jones, fought strongly against his release, describing the profound pain her family continues to endure. The parole application was rejected.

A Family’s Enduring Pain

Kelly’s mother and family have lived with unimaginable grief for decades. Not only did they lose their beloved daughter and granddaughter in the most horrific way, but they have also been denied the closure of laying her to rest. The absence of her remains has left a permanent wound that time cannot fully heal.

Caroline Jones has been a powerful voice, advocating for her daughter’s memory and pushing back against any possibility of the killer walking free.

Remembering Kelly Anne

Kelly Anne Jones was a lively, innocent little girl whose life was cruelly stolen from her. She would have turned 40 years old in 2025. Instead, she remains forever three years old in the hearts of those who loved her.

Her case stands as a devastating reminder of how vulnerable our children can be — even in the care of family — and how one person’s evil can destroy so many lives.

Gone from this world, but forever held in the hearts of her family and all those who continue to remember her. May her memory bring strength to her loved ones, and may justice continue to keep her killer behind bars.

Her story is a call for vigilance, for protecting the innocent, and for never forgetting the little ones who were taken too soon.
