The Tragic M-urder of 6-Year-Old Alanna Gallagher
On July 1, 2013, in the quiet suburban neighborhood of Saginaw, Texas, six-year-old Alanna Gallagher was playing outside her home, just like any other summer day. With her bright smile and cheerful personality, Alanna was a beloved little girl who brought joy to everyone around her. That afternoon, she was lured away by her 17-year-old neighbor, Tyler Holder.
What happened next was every parent’s worst nightmare. Holder took Alanna, sexually assaulted her, and then suffocated the little girl by placing plastic bags over her head. A few hours later, neighborhood children made the devastating discovery — Alanna’s tiny body, wrapped in a tarp and stuffed inside a black trash bag, was found on a nearby street.
Swift Investigation and Dramatic Arrest
The investigation moved quickly thanks to forensic evidence. DNA found at the crime scene was matched to Tyler Holder. On July 23, 2013, when police arrived at Holder’s home with an arrest warrant, he opened fire on the officers, shooting an Arlington police detective in the leg. After a brief shootout, Holder was wounded and taken into custody.
Before his arrest, Holder had also deliberately set fire to the Gallagher family’s car and a small memorial that had been created for Alanna. These acts only added to the horror and pain the family was already enduring.
Justice in Court
In September 2014, Tyler Holder pleaded guilty to capital murder, attempted capital murder (for shooting the officer), and arson. Because he was 17 years old at the time of the crime, he was not eligible for the death penalty under U.S. Supreme Court rulings. He was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 40 years. He must serve at least 50 years before becoming eligible for parole.
