The Heartbreaking Disappearance of Madison Roy
On May 11, 2021, 14-year-old Madison Roy-Boudreau left her home in Bathurst, New Brunswick, for what should have been just another ordinary school day. Described by those who knew her as a bright, lively, and loving teenager, Madison was full of energy and promise.
Around 7:30 a.m., she was last seen getting into a grey Ford Ranger in the city. It was a moment that seemed routine at the time — but it marked the beginning of a tragedy that would shatter her family and haunt the entire Bathurst community. Madison never arrived at school. She never came home. And no one has heard from her since that fateful morning.
From Missing Person to Homicide Investigation
In the hours following her disappearance, Madison’s family, friends, and local authorities immediately launched an extensive search. The Bathurst Police Force and later the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Major Crime Unit conducted ground searches, canvassed neighborhoods, questioned witnesses, and followed every possible lead.
By mid-August 2021, the case took a devastating turn when police officially reclassified Madison’s disappearance as a homicide investigation. She is presumed dead, though her remains have never been found.
The Suspect and Ongoing Investigation
In January 2025, newly unsealed court documents revealed that police strongly suspect Steven Laurette, a man from the South Tetagouche area near Bathurst, in Madison’s death. According to the records, police believe Laurette was with her when she was last seen alive. However, as of 2026, no charges have been laid against him in connection with her case, and the allegations have not been tested in court.
The RCMP continues to actively investigate the case. As recently as May 2026 — marking five years since her disappearance — authorities renewed public appeals for information, emphasizing that the file remains open and active.
A Community That Refuses to Forget
Madison’s disappearance deeply affected the people of Bathurst. In the weeks and months after she vanished, community members rallied together, distributing flyers, organizing searches, and holding vigils. Her family has endured unimaginable grief, living every day with the pain of not knowing exactly what happened to their beloved daughter, granddaughter, and sister.
Despite the passage of time, Madison’s loved ones continue to hold onto hope that one day they will find answers — and hopefully bring her home.
