The Miraculous Recovery of Brittani Marcell

On September 10, 2008, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 17-year-old Brittani Marcell was home alone, excitedly waiting for her mother Diane to come home for lunch. It was supposed to be an ordinary Wednesday. Instead, it became the day that nearly ended her life.

A man broke into the family home and brutally attacked Brittani with a shovel, striking her repeatedly in the head and face. When her mother walked through the front door, she was met with a horrifying scene: her daughter lying in a massive pool of blood, with the attacker still standing over her holding the bloody shovel. The intruder threatened Diane with a kitchen knife before smashing through a glass window and fleeing.

A Long and Painful Road to Recovery

Brittani’s injuries were catastrophic. She suffered multiple skull fractures, a broken jaw, shattered eye socket, broken arm and wrist, and a severe traumatic brain injury. Doctors placed her in a medically induced coma for ten days. When she finally woke up, she had almost no memory of the attack. She genuinely believed she had been in a car accident.

The road to recovery was incredibly difficult. Brittani had to relearn basic skills like walking, talking, eating, reading, and writing. She lost vision in her left eye and hearing in one ear. Through sheer determination and her mother’s unwavering support, she slowly began rebuilding her life.

Eight Years of Silence — Then a Miracle

For eight long years, the case remained cold. The only solid piece of evidence was a single drop of the attacker’s blood found on a shard of broken glass from the window he had smashed while escaping.

Then, in 2016, something extraordinary happened. Through intensive therapy, hypnosis, and specialized memory recovery techniques, Brittani began slowly regaining fragmented memories of that terrifying day. She was able to describe specific details about her attacker — including his brown eyes and the fact that he had no tattoos on his arms.

Justice Finally Served

These recovered memories, combined with the DNA evidence, finally led investigators to Jason “Jay” McDonald Hansen, a former acquaintance and neighbor. In July 2017, Hansen was arrested. In April 2018, he pleaded no contest to attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary. In July 2018, he was sentenced to the maximum of 18 years in prison.

A Story of Unbreakable Strength

Brittani Marcell’s story is nothing short of miraculous. Not only did she survive a vicious attack that doctors feared would kill her, but years later she used the incredible power of her own mind to help bring her attacker to justice. Her resilience, combined with her mother Diane’s love and support, turned a story of unimaginable horror into one of hope, strength, and eventual accountability.

Today, Brittani continues to inspire others as a survivor and advocate. Her case remains a powerful reminder of the human brain’s remarkable ability to heal — and the importance of never giving up, even when justice seems out of reach.
